What was the real "sacrifice"?

In Jesus For the Rest of Us, we are learning together how to incorporate an inclusive, human, Jesus and how we can apply what we know of Jesus to our daily lives.

What did Jesus sacrifice? Did He die for us? Is that the whole point - He died for our sins?  Is God mean? Did He allow Jesus' death?

Are there other ways to look at what Jesus did on Good Friday, Easter and ever since?
