Mr. Homer B. Williams received Alabama Southern’s 2014 African American Trailblazer Award. Mr. Williams has been married to Nannie Ruth Madison Williams for 58 years and he is the father of six children. Described as a spiritual and civil rights leader, Mr. Williams has made many notable contributions to Monroe County and made positive changes in both local and state government. While serving as a teacher, coach and administrator for almost forty years, he fought for equal pay in the Monroe County Public School System after discovering colleagues were receiving more pay than African-Americans. Working alongside others, he was a pioneer for the first NAACP chapter in Monroe County. Alabama Southern believes it is important to recognize Monroe County residents for extraordinary accomplishments, heroic and courageous efforts and perseverance despite incredible odds.
