Thought for Today March 25, 2019 Sleeping with the ENEMY “The triumph song of life would lose its melody without the minor keys” MARY MCLEOD BETHUNE, EDUCATOR The master taught you to “love your enemies.” Why? When we look at our “enemies” as our teachers, they cease to be our opponents and eventually become our greatest assets. We are told of an ancient Greek who paid someone a daily wage to follow him through his affairs and insult him so that, through learning to remain steadfast in the face of criticism, he would develop strength of character. Considering his example, perhaps we should be thankful that our adversaries are doing us such a valuable service. Throughout her workshops, tennis great Althea Gibson demonstrates this principle. Why? Because superior opponents force us to do our best. And so it is with the inner game of life. We want to grow; we want to improve our skills in life. If you have mastered any field of endeavor, you know the value of challenge, adversity, and discipline. The violin virtuoso welcomes with enthusiasm a new and difficult piece of music. He must flex his muscles to master the piece. He knows that through the practice of overcoming the challenge his proficiency is enhanced. “The same hammer that shatters the glass,” Marcus Garvey explained, “forges the steel.” Looking at adversity and challenge in this manner, we really can love our enemies. They serve us hard shots until we learn to return them.
I will embrace my difficulties and grow from them.
