Try. Fail. Try again. A man coming into masonry could be forgiven for expecting he will be connecting with ancient challenges. It is not hard to imagine his disappointment. Doubtful it was a single thought  or one influencer who assumed  modern men would be put off by a challenge of their own making, even if testing outcomes were conclusive proof of their character. But if the purpose of Freemasonry is not to challenge, won't the hollowed out framework become a social club?  How could a man reconcile one with the order?  It plays on a mans weaknesses to support his ego and ambitions.  To advance him  not because of his competence but politically is insincere.  Even for a mason wanting and need to prove himself to himself, he is a stranger in a strange land. Happiness is of the profane world variety not the joy of discovery of truths.  If there is an orthodoxy within Freemasonry as I believe we are instructed to a daily study of Arts & Science and if there is no accountability, not test of his obligation, what then is unique about the Craft?   We have allowed intrusions from the profane world, carried with us and not  challeged, to interfere with our sacred space and authenticity far too long.   What to do?  Discerning masons are leaving their isolation, reacting to a voice of reason and recognition. There is fork in the road. The path to west is well used. The path to the east is empty. It is a path that requires commitment. It is where men lean into the details. It is where men willing to commit to the goal will meet true mentors. And then, if he rises to the best of his abiilty, if he shows the necessary initiative,   then he will be worthy of being tested. Tell me, which story appeals to you? Which one is worthy of your precise time?  Life is not a dress rehearsal.
