It doesn't require the darker notions of Alistair Crowley to show us there are beautiful paradoxes inside the body of philosophical discussion. Not we are indulge completely in philosophy, we clearly set ourselves to philanthropy. Committing well intended deeds is not without it's critics. We live in an age of cynicism and suspicion, for good reason. When any group has influence, it must be held to accounts. Otherwise it becomes overbearing.  Not that we ever wanted a choir of syncophants to blindly extoll our virtues, we move forward focusing on individual development. Just when we begin enjoying the simplicity of compliance to authority, we chuck that out for something much more authentic- reasoning.  As diabolical is it is, teaching men to reason has been on-going for thousands of years. History reveals how, it raises the human condition beyond religious and political notions. It teaches us that we too can soar up toward the sun, with risk of failure being the price of the perspective as we take a step back.  What we learn is that lofty views are not always beautiful. History unvarnished  and unmanipulated, is a source of learning. So knowing about risk, we self regulate, a way of protecting ourselve as me move into the great unknown.  While there are similarities between men, there are also idiosyncracies. Adding the need to translate ideas to reflect local conditions and history will encourage men to think and apply their reasoning and should encourage us to look for the variations and unique cultures within our broader constitutional protections.  We need look no further than our own ability to commit to Brotherhood, to know we are safe and secure and the honesty to know if we are avoiding the workload.  Freemasonry is transformative. It is not easy and never meant to be. So enjoy the metaphor. Pick up the tools and set to your work. Are you masterful or not?  A mirror reveals so darned much.
