Masonry calls it light. Philosophers call it the essential. Call it what you will-  those who can surrender their innocence for optimism. Those who cannot associate with those who can, drawn by an undefinable gravity. Regardless of motive or ability, all are the better for it.  Masonry is goal directed. Trying to define them is one of the most interesting social aspects of the craft.  An endless array, facets cut to reveal the depths of masonry, a bag of diamonds- some reflecting dullness, others as if on fire- revealed when a master mason rises to the questions.  Artistry becomes evident by his approach to the instruments, measured by his timing, his grace, the ability to harmonize with his group, and for some- to harmonize with the global community.

Utopia, like masonry is a construct of man's thinking.  Plato wrote to us about Atlantis. Possibly he was being mischievious, knowing well that it existed in the imagination but his mention would prompt others to search for landmarks? Or we could be even more generous and connect the Philosopher, not as a mason but fraternally.  To think membership in the Craft is a step up for the entire world is worldly.  You could say hubris. But I think it a way, for most of mankind, the ideals of masonry are a step up;  the stuff mothers teach their sons and daughters.  Even then we surely know there are exceptions.  There are people who do not need masonry- considerate, beautiful, curious, generous and enlightened; our neighbours.

Perhaps we have ridden on the coat-tails of the courts too long. The secret has been let out. We carry forward the burden of outdated assumptions that the women and illiterate are unworthy of the secrets of the Gentle Craft.  Can we then teach a man how to balance that collision with his values?
