George Washington has become a legend for people of the United States. His life is punctuated by noble thinking and a humanistic philosophy.  Whether he actually said and did all the wonderful things is of less concern than the fact he has been absorbed into mythology. But who could argue with such homilies as this:  " A good moral character is the first essential.  It is highly important not only to be learned but to be virtuous".

It is that latter portion 'to be virtuous' that is the strain of Prometheus. And for good reason. For thousands of years, philosophical theorists have always and continue strive to identify the evasive comprehensive model.  And I fear we need to heed the warning of Daedalus to his son Icarus.  Only a foolish person would take his caution literally- and only a fool would ignore it.  Daedalus the Master Craftsman, built the labyrinth. But what interests us is the wooden frame, coated with feathers held in place with wax- the means to escape Crete. In his youthful enthusiasm, the son soared in a state of amazement, higher and higher- until the heat of the sun melted away the wax plunging Icarus into the sea.

What amazing state?  What sun would be the risk to masonry?   The wonderful metaphor seems to tell us too much light can be dangerous.  Does this mean the philosophy and principles of masonry must be kept in perspective to avoid falling from the sky?

But today we examine what limits there are to maintain a safe escape from ignorance to insight.
