Tonight we have the first in a series of topical discussions for 2024.

We keep going to church for all sorts of reasons. There’s the community. We love the intergenerational relationships that don’t come anywhere else. Eating chicken salad and grapes around plastic tables in the basement gives me a sense of connection to all sorts of people I wouldn’t know otherwise. I want our congregation to pray for us when we are in crisis. I want to have a reason to serve at our local soup kitchen.

There’s also the spirituality. I want our kids to be immersed in a tradition that goes back thousands of years.

-So, what is truth?

Here’s a simple definition drawn from what the Bible teaches: Truth is that which is consistent with the mind, will, character, glory and being of God. Even more to the point: Truth is the self-expression of God. That is the Biblical meaning of truth. Because the definition of truth flows from God, truth is theological.

-EMBRACING THE CROSS

Paul does not want to know Jesus in some undefined or abstract way. To know Jesus is to be joined to Him in His death and resurrection (Philippians 3:10-11). If we want to know the power of Jesus’ resurrection, then we must first meet Him at the cross. The power of His resurrection came only after Jesus had experienced the suffering, rejection and death of the cross.

These and others topics we will talk about tonight.
