THE MEANING OF FAITH

Hebrews 11:1-8, 13-16

The epistle to the Hebrews is one of the

general epistles. In the canon of Scripture, they

are called general epistles because they were not

addressed to a particular church or individual.

Among this group of New Testament writings

are the books of James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2,

and 3 John, and Jude. They differ from the

Pauline epistles in structure and purpose.

They are referred to as general epistles because

they provide a broad scope of teachings and

doctrine about the church and the Christian life. Hebrews is filled with words of exhortation

and encouragement for second-generation Christians grappling with a host of external and internal

problems (see Hebrews 5:12–6:4).
