American Special Forces on April 24, 1980, made a daring attempt to rescue United States embassy personnel seized as hostages on November 4, 1979, by Iranian students in Tehran, Iran.  Mechanical failures and an accident ultimately caused the mission to fail, leaving behind eight dead brave American servicemen.  The failure of this Operation Eagle Claw and the wider Iranian hostage crisis contributed to President Jimmy Carter's loss in the 1980 elections to Ronald Reagan.  Show host Andrew E. Harrod will examine this event and its longterm implications for the American military, as well as the wider history of attacks upon diplomatic representatives in Muslim-majority countries.
