By now we all know about the tragic loss of life from the helicopter crash that took the life of retired NBA star Kobe Bryant, his 13-year old daughter, Gianna, and 7 others during a flight to a youth girls basketball game in California last Sunday.  We will discuss the event, mainly from a media coverage perspective, as well as the unfortunate attention-seeking that often goes with such tragedies.

This week is marks the anniversaries of two NASA tragedies, notably, Apollo I that took the lives of Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee on 1/27/1967. And in a tragedy known as much for its public view as for the tragedy itself, 1/28/1986 was the day the world--literally--saw the on-tv broadcast of the space shuttle Challenger and its awful fate, taking the lives of NASA atronauts Francis "Dick" Scobee, Michael Smith, Greg Jarvis, Ron McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnick, and the first civilian flyer, teacher Christa McAuliffe. I was living in Florida and saw, from a distance, the chaos and confusion in the sky as Challenger met its terrible end. I will reflect a bit on those two events, as well.

And of course, we'll talk Super Bowl, the absurdity that has become the NFLs Pro Bowl, and my Iowa Hawkeyes hot streak and huge comeback over Wisconsin, overcoming a 12-point deficit with 7+ minutes left before ending the game with a 23-5 run. And the game also saw a "nutty" technical foul by the dirtiest player since Duke's Grayson Allen.
