Do Islamists Change Their Spots? In America, most individuals convicted of Islamic terrorism have long jail terms and comparatively few have come up for parole. In Europe, the situation is different with sme individuals - such as Al-Qaeda convert Andrew Rowe, jailed for 15 years in 2005 but freed on June 24, 2010 - have returned to society.
Islamists are not like other terrorists - they are not fighting for land or civil rights. They are fighting for religious supremacy.
In Britain several convicted terrorists released from jail early on parole have been returned to prison. There are convicted terrorists due to be freed from jail this year, with one assistant of shoe bomber Richard Reid due to be released on the eve of the 2012 London Olympics.
How should a society deal with religious terrorists? If they still follow a literalist interpretation of a faith that justifies jihad, should they ever be released half-way through their sentences? Do long jail terms create anti-hero and martyr status for such people? Do incarcerated religious terrorists turn their prison wings into madrassas where jihad is promoted?
