Hello One Minute Til Midnight radio audience. Continued: Abraham's Journey
Where did the idea of a Canon originate & how did it develop? From the First NT: Despite the weaknesses of various subjective theories of the composite nature of Romans, fairly strong evidence exists that it once circulated in 2-4 alternative forms. Our sources make it clear that the version in the Apostolikon lacked chapters 15 & 16; but a version lacking the same 2 chapters once circulated outside of Marcionite circles, a fact established by multiple strands of evidence. Some of this Christian literature contemporary with Marcion reflects a struggle between followers of Jesus and others within the broader OT tradition over the meaning and lasting value of the OT scriptures. The author of the Letter of Barnabas, for example, insists on the obsolescence of literal application of those scriptures. The typological & allegorical interpretive tradition he promotes would come to dominate non-Marcionite forms of Marcion Christianity from that point forward and would allow the authority of the OT scriptures, primarily as repositories of symbolic imagery whose meaning was detached from OT religious practice. Claiming to be the “true Israel,” such Christians laid claim to OT heritage while breaking continuity with more literal ways of reading & applying OT sacred texts AND THEREFORE GOD'S LAW. What emerges is the product of the prophecies in the OT of a curse realized by a people believing they are blessed: Christians. Mal ch's 2 & 3, Isa 22 & 28, Jer16. Christianity thus emerges as the answer to the question how almost even the very elect may be deceived, yet current Cannon is the only revered sacred text by Christians.
