The seven sorrows of Mary are:

1. St. Simeon’s Prophecy (Luke 2:35)

2. The Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-14)

3. The Loss of Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:44-52)

4. The Meeting of Mary and Jesus on the Way to Calvary (Tradition Luke 23:26-32)

5. The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus (John 19:16-30)

6. The Piercing of the Side of Jesus, and His Descent from the Cross (John 19:31-37 and Tradition)

7. The Burial of Jesus (John 19:38-42)

In looking at the crucifix, consider meditating on the suffering of Jesus. The crowning of thorns and the wounds on his head reflects the suffering he bore because of what we place in our head. The decisions to rebel against God.

His right hand (wrist) nailed to the cross reflects the things we did that caused sin, His left hand (wrist) nailed to the cross reflects the things we failed to do.

Study the feet, sometimes you will see a crucifix with the left over right, sometimes we might see the feet fastened separately.

Either way, this reflects our choosing to walk a wrong path, a rabbit trail.

Consider the lance through the heart, how the Sacred Heart of Jesus loves us all so much, yet we have hardened our hearts against him choosing to sin. There is so much we can meditate on using the crucifix.
