Two women, Fabiana Cecchino (35) and Serafina Giovanna Valentino (33), had a vision of Mary first as the Pieta and later as Our Lady of Sorrows in a cave at Castelpetroso, Italy. Mary appeared in a cave March 27,1888 to two women in their thirties. Up to 1889 almost a thousand people witnessed the apparitions of Our Lady repeated as "Mother of Sorrows." Simultaneously with these supernatural phenomena manifested also many miraculous healings, and was discovered a source of spring water. Even the bishop of the diocese authority had the privilege of an apparition of the Blessed Virgin. Today, in memory of Marian these miraculous phenomena, is a sanctuary, which is the destination of many pilgrimages, and a house of hospitality for the pilgrims.
