Deepertruth: St. Vincent de Paul Active In Missionary Work

Jesus gave this example, “And he sat down and called the Twelve and he said to them, “If any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” And he took a child, and put him in the midst of them; and taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.” (Mark 9:35-37)

Acts Chapter 6 informs us that the Apostles established an order of deacons to help them with the care of the widows. The Church has always needed help to take care of the poor. We do become the Lord’s hands when we do his will, to take care of the needy.

Through the inspiration of St. Vincent de Paul, the founders of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul would come to the United States in 1845 beginning at the Basilica of St. Louis.

This Basilica, commonly called “The Old Cathedral”, was named in honor of St. Louis, King of France.

Father John Timon, a Vincentian priest from Pennsylvania, would establish a local chapter in Louisville Kentucky in 1854 and the Society has never looked back since.

The Society has a broad outreach that has helped untold millions of people all over the world.

They continue to help the poor regardless of background of those needing help.

According to their webpage, it states, “The St Vincent de Paul Society’s members and volunteers reach out to the most vulnerable in our community through our Conferences, Special Works and Vinnies shops. Members and volunteers assist people in need and do not discriminate against cultural, religious or political beliefs.”
