Deepertruth wants to welcome Jeff Hutchins to co-host the Friday shows that will be based on Evangelization for the Catholic Faith! Welcome aboard Jeff!

The social-historical contextual perspective of “binding and loosing,” which Jesus gives toSimon Peter individually, he gives to the rest of the disciples collectively, at least somewhat (Matthew 16:18; 18:18). What does Jesus have in mind when he says “whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven?”

There is no understanding the words of a man 2,000 years removed from us without studying the assumptions and perspectives he would have had, and imposing our modernistic views on it just will not do, and yet many Christians do not bother to learn what Jesus’ perspective was when he said these words. And yet, the access to the meaning is widely available, if one would just study the meaning.

Josephus Flavius, the 1st century Jewish historian, uses the term once (to my knowledge), and his usage is very revealing: “These Pharisees artfully insinuated themselves into her favor by little and little, and became themselves the real administrators of the public affairs: they banished and reduced whom they pleased;THEY BOUND AND LOOSED [men] at their pleasure; and, to say all at once, they had the enjoyment of the royal authority…” (Wars of the Jews 1:5:2)
