A type is some person, or event, or ceremony recorded (in the Old Testament) to foreshadow a future person, event, or ceremony.
Types of the Old Testament are pictures (snap shots) in which the doctrines of the New Testament are previewed. The OT is a record of (the Children of) Israel from their time in bondage to the taking of the Promsed Land. The events of their OT history typify the plan of salvation revealed in the New Testament (recorded for our instruction). - Larkin
