Lancaster, VA – Deborah and Terry Haydon are the co-owners of DT Callis Seafood, a thriving oyster processing business in the Chesapeake Bay area.

“Oysters are making a comeback,” says Deborah. “The east coast market for fresh oysters is bringing the industry back and growing demand should ensure the future our company.

To look at Deborah and her husband Terry, you might think they’re just a married couple trying the oystering business. But Terry has been oystering his entire life. And this is not Deborah’s first time around the block. Starting out in the dairy industry and then the plant nursery industry, Deborah has always taken businesses to a new and higher level,

“I think it's the care that's put into the work,” If you go to work daily and it's just a job, then you're not going to excel or progress anywhere but where you are right now. If you go at it so that it's your life, then everything changes. Your outlook your attitude, your technique, your approach, everything changes.”

In the dairy industry, Deborah says she had people coming to her farm from all over the world to pick her brain. She realized then she had something to share.

“Sometimes I really like a challenge,” says Deborah. “You have to be on the forefront. It takes work, but it also takes being foxy at times, holding your cards and playing them close to your vest until the time is right.”
