Part 2: CUTV News Radio spotlights software developer and analyst Ellen Behrens

Modesto, CA – The computer that first sent man to the moon had less power than the cellphone in your pocket. Today’s guest has seen the evolution of computers first hand.

“Watching this change over time, the speed with which it’s changed, and how fast things become obsolete has been really interesting,” says Ellen Behrens. “That’s why I’ve enjoyed it so much; there’s always something new to learn. It’s been fascinating. It’s why I’ve stayed in the industry.”

Behrens is a software developer and analyst for Stanislaus County Community Services Agency, where she helps her colleagues effectively use business management and database software to improve efficiency.

“Whoever I’ve worked with, I helped them to make use of the technology available to do their job better,” says Behrens. “That’s still what I do as a software developer: make their jobs easier.”

To Behrens the question is always: what is the purpose and can I accomplish what I need with less effort, whether it’s using existing software or developing software?

“In order to work with music, you have to understand the language of music, and there is a similarity between music and writing a good program,” says Behrens.

Behrens said she’s fascinated by improving processes and efficiency, especially toward purposes she finds worthwhile. The agency she works with currently does a great deal of work with child welfare and protective services.

“It’s not about making money for investors. That doesn’t motivate me,” says Behrens. “To know I’m working to better the lives of other people is more important to me than striking it rich.”
