Oakland, CA – Criminal defense lawyers often get a bad reputation. People wonder how someone could defend a person accused of horrific crimes.

But the reality is it’s what our United States Constitution calls for; the 6th Amendment states that each of us has a Constitutional right to the assistance of counsel, to be informed of the accusations against us, and to obtain witnesses in our favor.

Of course, the information a defense attorney needs to represent you in court doesn’t magically appear in his e-mail one day. He or she has to go out and find it. That job becomes the task of a private investigator.

Francie Koehler is a licensed private investigator in the state of California specializing in criminal defense investigation and civil litigation such as discrimination, sexual harassment or wrongful termination. Since 1985, Koehler has conducted a wide range of civil and criminal investigations at both federal and state levels in addition to supervising a staff of investigators. Her chief investigative focus is pre-trial and post-conviction criminal defense.

“Our job is to gather the facts. We develop information and provide it to the attorney so the attorney can consult with the client and make the best decision possible to defend the case,” says Francie. “One of the things that keep us going is that there truly are innocent people out there. It doesn’t happen often, but every now and again we’ll have someone who is factually innocent. You work extra hard on those cases because you know what the end result will be if you don’t give it your all. Helping to exonerate an innocent individual or finding exculpatory information in a pretrial setting is truly rewarding.”
