Ottawa, Ontario – The current and future economic playing field requires union members and employers alike to work together toward mutual success. It's time to let go of old thinking: “Us vs. Them.” The modern union must harness the energy and expertise of its members to work more effectively with employers and other partners.

Janet Stewart and the Labour Leadership Team have asserted themselves as “The Change Agents of Choice” for progressive unions. The Labour Leadership Team specializes in working with forward-thinking, partner-minded unions that recognize the value of working collaboratively with employers for mutual success. Janet works with unions to build a customized leadership development program to promote organizational change.

“I want to be part of creating the modern union,” says Janet. “I want people to understand that not all unions are bad and any union can change. Employees should be rewarded in such a way that employers and employees alike can be successful, so it’s about restoring the symbiotic relationship between union and employer. There needs to be a balance.”

Longstanding unions develop hierarchies over time. A progressive union has an interest in making decisions as a “self-directed” union, where the real concerns of members can be heard and addressed. Leading this type of change is not easy, but it’s the Labour Leadership Team’s specialty.

“Change happens whether we like it or not,” says Janet. “Some unions embrace change. Those are the unions where I can have the most positive influence.”
