Port Angeles, WA – Recovery from any addiction requires a massive recalibration in thinking and behavior. For years, life has been organized around using alcohol or other drugs to avoid feelings; to be suddenly expected to stop and confront those feelings and all damage left in the wake of your past behavior can be tremendously difficult.

Alida Schuyler is a leading expert and trainer in Recovery Life Coaching, a branch of professional coaching that puts you, not your challenges with drugs, at the center of the coaching process. As the founder of the first recovery coaching training school, Crossroads Recovery Coaching, Schuyler trains people to coach the recovery process and also works with private clients.

“Recovery Coaching was originally developed for people already in recovery to enjoy their lives more,” says Schuyler, “because people who enjoy life are more likely to stick with recovery. So a recovery life coach helps you find your strengths and apply them to create a better life.”

Though she’s remained abstinent for over 30 years, Schuyler still considers herself a woman in recovery from addiction. She’s used her deep and integrated understanding of change to develop the philosophical basis for Recovery Coaching. According to Schuyler, a Recovery Coach can be an excellent change agent because coaching is based on a partnership model; there’s equal power between the coach and the client and the client choses their own goals for recovery.

“When I learned about coaching in 1997 and then saw how useful it could be for people seeking recovery I was very excited. When I discovered that recovery coaching didn’t already exist, I knew I would have to create it,” says Schuyler. "It’s been incredibly gratifying to help people make changes and sustain them. I am very proud of the quality of coaches who graduate from Crossroads.”
