Reno, NV – The burden of caring for a sick family member or friend would take its toll on the best of us. But who is caring for the caregivers?

perks n moore is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support for caregivers. Lead by Sally Moore, perks n moore seeks to empower caregivers by restoring their self-esteem and improving their skills.

“The goal is to provide a home away from home,” says Moore, “a place where they can have time for themselves and meet with other caregivers. I’ll be there to help them in any way I can with their immediate needs and make plans for long-term needs.”

Moore is the author of Two Tears: An Alzheimer’s Caregiver’s Journal chronicling her experience as a caregiver for her mother and husband, both of whom suffered from Alzheimer’s when the science behind the disease was still in its infancy.

“One day my mother and I were playing a tile game,” recalls Moore. “She said, ‘I have Alzheimer’s but I don’t know what that is.’ I said. “Then let’s find out together.’ I became her caregiver and she taught me patiently what to do and what not to do.”

Moore’s experience as a caregiver inspired what has since become a nearly 30-year journey advocating for caregivers across the country. Her dream has always been to help other caregivers, offering a voice to those she believes have been forgotten.

“Caregivers need to take time for themselves,” says Moore. “The responsibility can come to define you. Don’t be ashamed. Ask for help. There’s a lot of sorrow but it can also be a joy-filled experience. It doesn’t have to be such a burden.”
