Through years of dedication and extensive knowledge, Dr. William L. Barney has become a staple of the educational system at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Dr. Barney has spent the majority of his career as a professor in the UNC department of history. His focus of study is in 19 Century U.S. history, more specifically the time of secession and the Civil War.

Along with establishing himself as a well-respected professor, Dr. Barney has authored and co-authored numerous historical works and textbooks. His works have been featured and studied in schools across the country. In The Making of a Confederate, Dr. Barney chronicles the life, inner struggle, and complexity of a Southern white man born into a slaveholding family in North Carolina through the time of secession, Civil War, and post-Civil War America. Featured themes include the cause of the Confederate identity and how some couldn’t let go of this identity after the war.

With The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Civil War, Dr. Barney presents a comprehensive guide to literally every aspect of the Civil War. From information about particular battles, generals, politicians, and armament; to art, music, medicine, and the cultural influences of the times; Dr. Barney leaves no stone unturned. Both of the aforementioned works by Dr. Barney are available at www.amazon.com.
