James 4:13-17

As we begin this New Year it’s important to plan, but there’s a right way and many wrong ways to beware of and avoid.

So we’ll use a story in the Book of James about a first century self-centered, self confident and complacent businessman making plans for his future.

And he has many kindred spirits here in this twenty-first century.

We’ll look at this story to learn some life lessons on proper planning.

So let’s look at this man who, in many respects, would be called a successful man in both the first and the twenty-first centuries.

But before we even get started, here's a definition of failure and it may be a very different definition than you’ve ever heard: Failure is actually succeeding at the wrong thing.

So everybody may be calling you a success, yet in truth you’re a horrible failure.

Now this man made three HUGE mistakes, and I don’t want any of us to make them.

So, as we plan for our futures, let’s heed these three warnings.

1. Beware of self-centered planning.

2. Avoid self-confident presumption,

3. Avoid complacent procrastination.
