DEUTERONOMY 4:2 GOD WARNS NOT TO ADD OR SUBTRACT FROM HIS WORD

You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.

This is something that God takes very seriously and we see a similar warning in Proverbs 30:6 which says, “Do not add to His words Or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar”. And in Revelation 22:18-19 when God says, “I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; 19and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.

What is the reason for this commandment?

  1. God wants His word to be kept pure.  Nothing should be added to it because you commit an evil which the law forbids.
  2. When we remove from His word a person is guilty of omitting the good which the law requires.
  3. When a person adds or or omit from the word of God, they are actually attempting to override what God is saying as if what He says is defective.
