NUMBERS 26:1-2 CENSUS OF A NEW GENERATION
1Then it came about after the plague, that the Lord spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying, 2“Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ households, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel.”
Again, we see a census being taken, except it is of those who had entered the Promised Land. We should by now be able to see why this book is called Numbers since the first count of the people was taken about a year after leaving Egypt and the second just before entering Canaan. Also, it was Moses and Aaron who were over the first count and then it was Moses and Eleazer over the second count. Except for Caleb and Joshua, everyone in the first count died in the wilderness.
