Mesopotamian religion was polytheistic, thereby accepting the existence of many different deities, both male and female... We believe Sumerian civilization first took form in southern Mesopotamia around 4000 BCE—or 6000 years ago—which would make it the first urban civilization in the region. It is from Mesopotamia and is written on tablets, in the Sumerian language c. 2100–2050 BCE. -- The Hammurabi code of laws, a collection of 282 rules, established standards for commercial interactions and set fines and punishments to meet the requirements of justice. Hammurabi's Code was carved onto a massive, finger-shaped black stone stele (pillar) that was looted by invaders and finally rediscovered in 1901. ... The code's goal was to bring justice, fair treatment of people, to the people of his empire. The code listed acts of wrongdoing along with punishments as well as rights to people living within the land.
