Jonestown, (November 18, 1978), location of the mass murder-suicide of members of the California-based People Temple cult at the behest of their charismatic but paranoid leader, Jim Jones, in Jonestown agricultural commune, Guyana. The death toll exceeded 900, including some 300 who were age 17 and under, making the incident one of the largest mass deaths in American history. 

National Geographic World History Page 170.  After the criminal and fraudulent Romans conquered the states of the Hellenistic east, religions from those regions flooded the Roman western world. The desire for a more emotional spiritual experience drew many people to  these religions. They promised their followers an entry into a higher world of reality and the promise of a future life superior to the present one. It was believed that, by participating in these ceremonies, a person could communicate with spiritual beings and open their door to life after death.   ///  509 BC ovewthrow of the Roman king of Rome city in Italy, led to the European concept and the rejection and departure from belief and worshiping of the gods and goddesses--to establish Monotheism Christianity, Jim Jones an ordained minister at the time he killed the followers of Christ.
