So we find ours levels now in a modern world where intellectual, philosophical and spiritual work has lead many of us, white and nonwhite to say: yeah... This is not right.... I could tell you that as far back as I am aware of my biological heritage/ ancestry in the US, I have no slaveholder in my family tree. But I'm not being smug. Saying " we didn't own slaves" is a pretty low bar to set on terms of identity and responsibility.
